I've been practicing Salsa Cubana for a while now and besides it being a lot of fun, it also teaches us some valuable lessons for life. Dancing Salsa Cubana is non-toxic leadership training! Here's why:

In Salsa Cubana it is crucial to understand the roles of the leader and the follower. Just to be clear: I'm not talking about gender here. This is about roles, independent of gender!

If you happen to be the leader it's on you to remember all the details of the figure and give the right signals at the right times. If you are stiff and pushy it's not gonna be fun dancing with you. If you want to show off and perform it's not gonna be fun for your partner either. Then, on the other end of the spectrum, there's the spaghetti-arm phenomenon. If you're too loose and wobbly your partner will have a hard time understanding when and where to move.

If you happen to be the follower it's on you to understand and read the signs of the leading partner. You follow the lead! If you reverse the roles during a dance it's highly confusing for both. All of a sudden there are mixed signals of where to move. That doesn't work. If done correctly the leader provides the clarity and space for the follower to rely on. Trust! Ideally, you don't have to second-guess. You can let go into the flow and fill up the space with your elegance and expressiveness!

Again, we are talking about roles, nothing more. This is not about gender, nor is it judgemental. Both roles are essential for a flowy and beautiful dance to manifest.
