Some conversations feel light and easy but are lacking a certain depths. Other conversations can touch on various topics and very little seems to be off-limit. Why is that? Let's have a look at a simple tool to explain how communication might flow in a small group.
When you, me, Frida and Fridolin have a conversation, we all have our own set of topics that we feel comfortable talking about. As you can see, these topics (black ovals) overlap in various ways. In the very center (blue space) we find the exact set of topics ALL of us feel comfortable with. We can stay within this set of topics and feel safe and comfortable. However, some of us might want to go deeper.
If we leave the comfort-zone of talking about the weather and go deeper into more personal or at times more controversial topics we increase the chance of creating deeper connection. At the same time we are risking that you, me, Frida or Fridolin take something personal.
Now it's up to you to decide how you would want your conversations to flow. Are you looking for harmony or deeper connection? Are you willing to be vulnerable and Say what you truly mean or would you like to keep things light and easy?
