Because living outside of ones own business creates stress! At least that’s how Byron Katie describes it. She compares three kinds of businesses: mine, yours and God’s business. Let’s have a look:
If I want for you to get a job, be happier than you are, be on time when you’re not, take better care of yourself, or understand me when you don’t… whenever I think anything along those lines I’m living in your business.
Byron Katie says: »If you are living your life and I am mentally living your life, who is here living mine? We’re both over there. (…) I am separate from myself, wondering why my life doesn’t work.«
God’s business includes everything that is outside of my control, your control, and everyone else’s control. Resisting what is outside of anyone’s control obviously causes stress without creating any productive result. A good examples for God’s business is the weather. Even though most people I know cannot actively influence it, it doesn’t keep some of them to complain about it.
When I’m living in your business or in God’s business I experience separation, resistance and stress. Not good!
The implied solution - from my perspective - would be to mentally withdraw attention and energy from everything that’s outside of my control and trust that it’s (eventually) working perfectly well without me interfering. Centering myself within myself. Dissolving resistance while completely (and here’s the big one) accepting what is.
