How is it going with your New Years resolutions after two weeks into January? Still going strong or already faltering? The showing-up distinction might help you out here!

In my twenties, when I was big time into sports, I had a rather hardcore attitude towards training. To get better at Kung Fu I applied Bruce Lee’s original training-regime religiously. To jump higher and further in Parkour I applied the original NBA plyometrics routine. You get the vibe… it was all about pushing through and getting it done! Suffering and sweating and a lot of RAH-RAH!

Today I have a much gentler approach when it comes to training and physical wellbeing. From people a lot smarter than me I learned that it’s futile to commit to an outcome and that it’s much more sustainable to commit to a process!

That’s when the *showing-up distinction *****was born! I no longer commit to completing a tough workout in the gym every single time I go. I commit to showing up at the gym regularly. Showing up at the gym is easy – I can manage to show up, even with a twisted ankle or a cold! Once I’m there, I decide what I’m capable of accomplishing in that very moment. Occasionally it’s a sweaty workout, other times it’s gentle streching and sometimes it’s sauna only.

The showing-up distinction can be applied to all kinds of areas and activities!

One client of mine wanted to commit to more self-care in the new year and it seemed to be an insurmoutable task. By simply commiting to showing up instead of a specific outcome he had an easy start and is already deeper into self-care than he thought possible.

Another client had the goal to get into meditation and again it seemed super tough for her. The idea to sit still with no thought for 20 minutes straight created a lot of resistance. But how about commiting to simply showing up, every day, for just a few minutes of meditation practice? When we take away the exaggerated ideas of what meditation is and what it should feel like and accept that we won’t sit perfectly still most of the time and that we will have a million thoughts… well, that sounds much more doable!
