Recently I heard Dr. Gabor Maté mentioning in a talk that there’s no growth without vulnerability. He was explaining further, that in nature growth always happens at the softest spot.

Think about the buds of a tree. The tree won’t grow at its well protected trunk. It has to break open and make itself vulnerable.

Think about the hermit crab moving houses. The crab has to literally leave the safety of its hard shell and make itself vulnerable.

As a possibility it’s similar with us. We won’t grow when our protective strategies are at work. We won’t grow in hiding. We have to make ourselves vulnerable in the right moment, the right surrounding and with the necessary amount of safety.

Let me be clear: This is not about getting hurt all over again. It’s about taking the risk in a safe and compassionate environment. Taking the risk to experience healing and integration in order to grow.
